Tree Work for Shawano Lake Lots and In-Town Yards

Shawano puts shoreline cottages, wooded yards and city streets within a short drive of each other, so the right approach depends on what sits under and around each tree. Here is what we can help with in and around the city:

  • Tree removal takes down a dead or leaning tree beside a lake cottage or a garage in town, with the drop planned around the house, the dock and the lawn.
  • Tree trimming lifts limbs off roofs and power lines. Oaks are best pruned outside April through July, the window the Wisconsin DNR names as the highest risk for oak wilt, so ask about timing when you call.
  • Storm damage cleanup is there when a limb lands on a roof or a trunk blocks the driveway, and our phone is answered 24/7.
  • Stump grinding takes the stump below the surface after a removal, leaving room for lawn, a garden bed or a new tree.

Every job starts with a free estimate, and we keep options to fit every budget. Seniors and veterans receive a discount, and we are fully insured.

Caring for Trees Around Shawano Lake and the Wolf River

Shawano is the county seat of Shawano County, and much of life here centers on the water. Shawano Lake covers about 6,178 acres with roughly 18 miles of shoreline, and a dam on the Wolf River in the city sets its level. On a lake lot, the heaviest side of a big tree is often the side facing the water, which can put limbs over docks, boathouses and swimming areas.

The Wolf River passes the city on its way south toward New London, where it meets the Embarrass and the Little Wolf. A shoreline tree that tilts a little farther toward the river or the lake each year is giving one of the clearest warnings a tree can give. Before we recommend anything on a waterfront lot, we look at the trunk, the base and the soil around it.

Ash trees deserve a careful look, too. The Wisconsin DNR says the emerald ash borer kills ash trees by feeding beneath the bark, and it warns that dead ash become a safety hazard. Whether your yard is off WIS 29, near the municipal airport on the lake, or north toward Menominee County, taking down a failing ash early is usually safer than waiting for it to fall on its own.

Planning Tree Work Through a Shawano Year

The lake sets the rhythm of the year in Shawano. Pontoon planes use part of Shawano Lake as a runway in summer, and two ice racing tracks run on the frozen lake in winter. Your trees follow a calendar of their own, and a little planning keeps the work simple.

Late fall and winter are good times for routine trimming, especially on oaks, because the risky oak wilt season is over and bare branches are easy to see. Spring is the time to walk the yard and look for limbs that broke under snow. Summer storms can bring a tree down without warning, which is one reason we stay open around the clock.

Shawano Questions

Questions From Shawano Homeowners

Do you work on lakefront properties on Shawano Lake?

Yes. Lakefront lots on Shawano Lake call for extra planning, because trees near the water can hang over docks, boathouses and beaches. We plan each cut around the structures and the shoreline, chip the brush and branches, and haul debris with our dump trailer. Call (715) 701-9234 to set up a free estimate, and ask about cleanup when we visit.

Is summer a bad time to prune oaks around Shawano Lake?

Usually, yes. The Wisconsin DNR lists April through July as the highest risk period for oak wilt, so the warm months when the lake is busiest are the months to leave healthy oaks alone. If a cut cannot wait, the DNR advises sealing it at once. Routine oak trimming in Shawano fits better in late fall or winter, and we can talk through any hazard limb now.

What should I do about an ash tree that is dying in my Shawano yard?

Have it looked at before it gets worse. A dead ash dries out and turns brittle, which makes it harder and riskier to take down the longer it stands. Whether the tree shades a cottage on the lake or a backyard near downtown, we can tell you if it is worth keeping or should come down, and the visit to look at it is free.

Who do I call first when a storm drops a tree on a line in Shawano?

Call your electric utility first if the tree is touching a power line, and keep children and pets well back until the line is made safe. Then call Stefanski Tree Service at (715) 701-9234; we answer 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Whether the tree landed on a lake cottage or a house in town, we cut it away and haul the debris.
